To me the aim that was definitely more prevalent was success. It was so much easier finding songs for success. The majority of rap songs that aren’t about pleasure are about success. A lot of songs, once again mostly rap, are about how much money they have earned and want you to see how successful they are. An observation I made while doing this second assignment was that for me it was somewhat difficult finding songs for liberation. Once again I did try to only use my itunes library so this might be why I found it so difficult.  I thought it would be easier when you could consider songs about break ups liberating in a way. The only song at first that came to mind for liberation was “Deuces”. On the other hand while I was going through my library to find songs for success, I just had to go through my list of songs and easily picked five out. The Hindu perspective of success I feel is much different from that of what people in American believe success is. Hindu’s believe that being successful is having enough money to support your family. Whereas in American begin successful would mean more of becoming wealthy.

  1. It is true that if you approach liberation from the perspective of being liberated from a relationship, it is much more prevalent in American music. I also depicted liberation as liberation from of American life and the desire for a more simple life--a liberation from our complex society, essentially. I feel as if a number of songs also depict that idea as well, an upsurge of freedom and activism against the hardships of our modern society.

  2. I completely agree with you on how the American perspective of success is different from the Hindu perspective. I mentioned that even in my post, how Hindu people will follow moral laws to achieve their success, but people in American will do anything they can to be rich and powerful.

  3. It is an interesting contrast between the Hinduism idea of success being to support your family and the American idea of success being riches, fame, etc. I also chose "successful" by Drake because I thought it represented Americans wanting success as their ultimate goal in life.

  4. I like what you said about how the Western and Hindu definitions of success vary. I wonder if it wasn't easier to find songs about the success aim because of this; because success is measurable as a competition so people feel the need to brag about their position more.

  5. I like your examples of Liberation. I do also agree that the liberation we speak of in American culture is not even close to the liberation spoke of in Hinduism. And @ Mike--I definite think that the different definitions of success played a factor is the ease of finding songs.
